http://www.smithgill.com/adriansmith.htm
I first read about architect Adrian Smith after researching the skyscraper Burj Dubai. After reading more about him he has been in the design business for over 30 years, has worked internationally in many different countries and is known for his towering skyscrapers. He has wrote books, won over 90 design awards and is a person to look up to and admire for all his hard work and achievements.

Graphic/Media Design

The good ole' graphic that we secretly look for on the back of every card we receive...we have been taught that this logo means quality and I think is effective because of that. I like the text also and it's simple design.

Just this simple red Target symbol has really helped Target stores advertise. This symbol is even used in their commercials and I think is very effective as a logo. Simple design sometimes is the way to go.

Maybe not so much up here but everyone from back home in FL knows what this graphic is! Obviously, with the orange and blue and the gator we can see it's the FL Gator logo....GO GATORS!!

We all know this graphic!! It is printed on everything from tee shirts, to pens, to notebooks. It displays our school colors yellow and blue and also has a spartan....GO SPARTANS!

Oh the golden arches, we've known what they meant since happy meal time and we'll never forget what they stand for. McDonald's has always used this graphic to advertise for their food.
There are some graphics that we will always recognize, such as the cows that advertise for Chick-fil-a, what a great way to promote chicken products. I like the cow idea as well as the little chicken graphic around the C in their logo, it looks like a lot of thought went into the design!

As IARC students we certainly recognize this design...the wonderful MAC symbol. I like this graphic because it is clean and simple and is easily noticeable.

Aww...this is probably one of my favorite graphics ever..just because I want one so bad! Even without the letters I think when people see this logo they recognize it. I think the touch of blue rather than just black and white is a nice design as well.

This is just one example of the graphics on a Camel cigarette pack. They always have vibrant colors, probably to grab your attention at the store. These days they have different artists' work displayed on the pack, as well as a bio about the artist. I think it's a great way to spread art...not that I'm saying to buy a pack for that reason of course!
Mmm...an ice cold Pepsi. Pepsi uses a unique blue color that when seen makes you think...Pepsi! I also like how they use red, white & blue in their logo to form kind of a ying yang look.

10 Out of This World Products

Wow!! Doesn't this pendant light fixture remind you of a snowflake? At the origin of Flame.MGX lies a sculpture made from a blob of clay, which was cut into a cube. Four corners were twisted clockwise, while the four other corners were twisted counter clockwise. The lampshade that originated from this sculpture is based on translucency and the interior volume is opened up entirely towards light and perception" http://www.plushpod.com/products/Flame_mgx_Pendant_Lamp-551-48.html I've never seen anything like this but it's simpy breathtaking. And it's funny how this is originally made from a CUBE..it's like we can't get away from them!! lol...Not only does it give off a soft light, but also a cool design on the wall...all this for $1040!

These chairs not only look comfortable but are fun, easy to clean and can be used indoor or outdoors. They come in all different colors and are made of thick acrylic. They are called the glide chairs, and I think the name fits them pretty well....they certainly do flow well. They are pretty pricey though at $729 a piece! They would look pretty cool in my dining area though!

This coffee table is different than any other! Simply made of wood, stained in a dark walnut color and topped with a piece of angular glass this table would look great in any modern room. I like it because it's simple and still has a lot going on. It does come in a lighter shade and is priced at $700. This stylish table would complete any room!http://www.eco-furniture.com/coffee-tables/amaya-cocktail-table_684_48.php
How cool is this entertainment center? It is made of acrylic and lighted. It comes in all different colors and is very unique in it's wavy design. It's interesting how they were able to mold the pieces to form this cool piece of furniture. No matter how cool the design is though the price isn't at $4311!! We as IARC students could just make this baby! http://www.artfurnitureontheweb.com/NoFrame/Items/064741nf.html#
I think this side table is appealing to anyone looking for a funky, unique looking piece of furniture. It is made up of random brushed steel rods, in no particular order and is topped with a round piece of glass. I could see this table used in an upscale bar perhaps, a designer's office or even a living room. I think it would be great to display it where the shadows from the rods would be casted on the ground...isn't it beautiful? Priced at $349 it's not too bad for a piece that will stand out.

All lit up!! Technology is amazing these days! This lamp is made of PMMA sheets and uses fluorescent bulbs to light up the lamp...it sure does put the regualar side lamp to shame! I think this would be a huge conversation piece in any home, I know I've never seen anything like it. Designer: Buro Vormkrijgers names his pieces and this one is Marie Louise. It can also display different colors and is priced at $1000. http://www.gnr8.biz/product_info.php?products_id=629

This funky metal cabinet by David Coddaire reminds me of something that would be found in Dr. Seuss' house! It is made of iron and welded together and stands about 5 feet tall. It also was softened with acid to add the blue color and also comes in vibrant red. I like this piece because it is fun and would be cute in a kid's room or playroom. However, the price of $1025 is a little pricey! https://www.guild.com/artitem/6098.html
This Japanese style end table was designed to look like a Japanese lantern, and I think they did a pretty good job of it. It even features a light so when you plug it in it even lights up like a lantern! It has a drawer in the bottom and comes in all shades from a natural finish to a black. I like this table because it's different and has a lot of character by itself, much less with other pieces of furniture, and is also multi-purpose...who knew you could have a light and end table all in one??
This unique looking lighting fixture i called the Le Klint pendant."These hand-folded sculptural pendant shades were designed by architect Poul Christiansen between 1969 and 1978 and have been in continuous production by the Danish company Le Klint." http://ylighting.com/leklinpenmod4.html I think this piece is beautiful because it can be displayed in all types of environments from bathrooms to even an office. It could either be casual or dressed up in a fancier environment.
This contemporary chandelier called artemide is made in Italy and costs about $1600. I like it because not only does it use just a regualar light bulb but it also features different colors of stained glass to add color as well as light. It also features brushed chrome which also gives it the modern look. I think this would be pretty in a modern looking loving room, or even an art gallery. http://www.louielighting.com/Itemdesc.asp?ic=ART%5F094108&eq=&Tp

10 Buildings

http://www.wired.com/
Building: Edifice Complex
Location: New York
Architect: Frank Gehry
"Billowing glass. Rippling titanium. Swooping steel. The engineers and designers at Permasteelisa turn the world's most daring buildings into reality."
This quote pretty much sums up this remarkable building. After reading the article on this building, the designers as well as builders didn't think this design could become a reality, and here's proof that anything is possible! The architect is Frank Gehry and the building is designed for the InterActiveCorp. What's also crazy about this building is that 2, 541 pieces of glass were used in the building and had to be heated up to 1, 200 degrees F to be formed! The building is a 9 story building with the glass facade. I would love to see this in real life.

http://www.blogger.com/www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/bank_of_china.html
Building: Bank of China Tower

Location: Hong Kong
Architect: I.M.Pei
It was interesting when I saw this building...the first thing it reminded me of was Josie's pencil box. They are both made up of a triangle design. This tower is made of steel and glass and took about 8 years to build. I think it caught my attention because it is very different than any building I have ever seen. I think it is graceful and adds a lot to the space.
http://www.greatbuildings.com/
Building: Church of St. Francis
Location: Brazil
Architect: Oscar Niemeyer
Wow, if we had a church like this around here I might be more excited to go! I like how the arches make up the church and how it reflects off of the water at night. I also think it is creative how they incorporated a tile mural on one side of the building. It seems like this would be a very open space for worship and praise.

http://www.greatbuilding.com/buildings/fallingwater.html
Building: FallingWater
Location: Pennsylvania
Architect: Frank Lloyd Wright
I first saw this building in Ben Adams' zine. How cool would it be to look out over your porch balcony everyday to see a waterfall cascading down the rocks? This is a house made of concrete and stone in Pennsylvania. I love the concept and the way that the house seems like it's almost floating over the water due to the floating platforms. I personally think it could use a little more color to make it stand out from the wooded area rather than be camouflaged. I do like how he used rocks in the design to make it feel like part of the natural environment too.

www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/London_City_Hall.html
Building: London City Hall
Location: London, England
Architect: Norman Foster
I think this building is unique because every view is different. From one side it looks like it's leaning, and from the view above it doesn't look like it's leaning at all. I think the glass adds a nice touch and is pretty on the water. I'm not sure the size but this building definitely looks monumental to me.

www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/bibliotheca_alexandrina
Building: Bibliotheca Alexandria
Location: Egypt
Architect: Snohetta
I chose this building because I visited it when I went to Egypt before. It is absolutely an amazing place not only to visit as far as architecture but it is also one of the largest libraries. The front side pictured above has a pool of water in front of it, and the glass panels allow all the natural light to shine in on the library itself. "The design concept is a simple circle inclined towards the sea, partly submerged in a pool of water, the image of the Egyptian sun, that in contemporary terms will illuminate the world and human civilization." (according to www.sis.gov.eg) On the outside of the building it is very modern with steel and glass and the inside features natural wood and granite and is absolutely breath taking with a media center, planetarium, 7 stories and a science museum. You can literally take a whole day to visit this place!

Building: Burj Dubai
Location: Dubai
Architect: Adrian Smith
Simply amazing. I knew that architecture in Dubai was booming but not like this! This tower, to be finished in 2009 will be the tallest building in the world. It's design mimics the desert flower seen a lot in Islamic architecture. In Islamic architecture the building is said to be ascending towards the heavens. This remarkable building will house one of the first Armani hotels, as well as residents and will cost approximately $900 million to create. It is made of concrete and steel. There will be about 190 floors and will also sit on about 500 acres that will also have offices, hotels, shopping malls etc. After reading this it makes me want to study abroad in Dubai even more..I can't wait!!

Building: Cathedral of St. Basil
Location: Moscow, Russia
Architect: Barma & Posnick
This cathedral is so gorgeous with all the vibrant colors and onion domes. At first I literally though this was a building at Disney World because of all the colors. This church probably holds quite a few people and stands about 64 meters high. If you look closely you can really see all the hard work and detail they put into creating this beautiful monument.

Building: St.Mary's Cathedral
Location: Tokyo
Architect:Kenzo Tange
This immediatley caught my attention because of the vertical straight lines accompanied by the soft, flowing swooping roofs on the side of the cathedral. This is located in Tokyo and is made of concrete. I also think this is interesting becuase to me it didn't seem like a building you would see in Tokyo.
Building: Stonehenge
Location: England
Architect: Unknown
I studied about Stonehenge in Art History and have always been baffled by it. It baffles me to think about how people back in 1500 could create this monument using their hands. I mean each stone alone weighs about 45 tons each. The stones each are 22 feet high and is a circular design. I think that maybe they formed a circle to mimic the sun, or maybe even used this to track time.

10 Design Firms

www.berlindesigns.com
I stumbled upon this design firm's website and found it to be pretty nice. It is interactive and well organized. The use of tabs provides links to different information on the designer Dalia Berlin. Examples are: about us, awards & publications, portfolio, etc. Also, the portfolio tab takes you to different photos of some of the rooms she has designed. This website was easy to navigate as well.
www.rsandh.com
I chose to check out this website because this is the company my dad works for. When you open up the page it immediately pops up with pictures of recent projects as well as tabs that link you to different areas of their company, such as: construction, transportation. etc. I think the website is well organized, informative, and easy to use, however, I think it could be a lot more interactive and include many more pictures than it does. All in all I would rate their website a B.

www.dezignare.com/interiorsbysharon/index.html
Although I like the colors used on this website it could still use a little pick me up. The page is easy to navigate through, mostly because there is not a lot of information and pictures. It only provides a small amount of information, and doesn't really even go over the concepts of the company. I would suggest to make their website more interactive and eye friendly to attract prospective clients...if their website is blah, what does that say about the firm??

www.dainteriordesign.com/index.html
I think this website is really nice. You can tell that a lot of time and though went into creating and maintaining the site. I like the colors and logos seen throughout the site, and it is very organized. It includes a lot of information about the company itself, as well as projects completed. It features a photo gallery, before and after pictures, a reference guide, and tons of pictures, which I love because I'm a visual learner! It also had enough text, not too much to where you get bored reading it, and just enough to get the point across and leave you wanting to know more....great page!

www.christopherburnsinteriors.com/gallery.html
This designer is based out of New York so you would think his web page would blow you away, however, I don't feel like that is the case. I like the set up of the page, but there are only a few photos to view, not a lot of information such as concepts, backgrounds, recent projects etc. and just boring! It says under the "bio" section that he has worked under some of New York's top designers, I wonder if they have seen and visited his website and what they think of it. I would suggest to him to add more of everything! Add more information about the company and what you specialize in, more about concepts, more pictures etc. The photos that are on the page are beautiful so why not add more??

www.rubylife.com/about.htm

I like the simplicity of this firm's website. it includes information abou the company, their objectives, goals as designers, and info. about the team that works together. It also gives info on the different phases of the design process in which the company works with the client. I also like the slide show of pictures that are shown, and the photos are all beautiful like they have just come out of a magazine. It also shows what magazines have featured the company's work, which I think is a nice feature for future clients to see.

www.tocardesign.com/about.html
When you first go to this site it features a slide show of different pictures which immediately grabs your attention. The site is well organized and gives the design goals, info on the company, founders etc. They also organized their pictures different on their site than any other. It includes tabs to go to residential, commercial, modern and traditional, you click on them and you can view the projects within each category. Also, their before and after pics are phenomenal and really give you a glimpse of what the company is capable of.

www.bjatmospheres.com/inspirations1.html
Can we say busy??? The information needed is given, but there is so much going on it is hard to tell where to go through the website. Even when you first log onto the page there are stripes, pictures, links and large text to all sort through. Also, the links for more info look like planks of wood on top on gray and white stripes, it doesn't feel like the 2 should be put together. The website doesn't flow. He does have some nice pictures, but a lot of them looked cluttered and too busy....overall, I think this site would be a lot more affective if it was toned down a bit.

www.sliferdesigns.com/about.htm
WOW! This website is impressive!! It's well organized, has a nice rhythm to it, and flows well. And it even shows their process! I looked on the founder's blog and she is a graduate of Chapel Hill which was very modivating. The site features a blog, portfolio, link to get to know the designers, before and after pictures. I think this website is also very personable which makes a difference as well. The site also features a location map of all the projects from the firm. When you visit the map you can click on the location and a picture will pop up with given information on the project...very impressive site, I will definitely revisit this site again.

www.ispacesinc.com/company/mission.cfm
There are things I like and dislike about this website. I like how when you put the cursor over a tab, it brings down more choices as far as info goes. I appreciate all the background, goal, process information they give, however I could do without the pages of text, it's too much. Also, seeing this is a child based design company you would think it would be more interactive and feature colorful backgrounds, pictures etc. And they do have pictures of bathrooms, playrooms, and bedrooms but you have to read two paragraphs of text before you can get to the good part! Overall, I would say this site could use more color, photos and less writing.
